About
Having previously provided the rhythmic backbone to Warp favourites Red Snapper‘s much loved outings in the early 2000s, Richard Thair and Jakeone’s own Toob project sprung into life in 2005 with the warmly received How to Spell Toob on the splendid Lo Recordings. Having spent the subsequent couple of years playing clubs and festivals across Europe, they’re now ready with the follow-up LP on the all-new Process imprint, with Push Me, Pull You due in September this year. The album is preceeded by a taster EP with three tracks: The opener Clipto sees Jakeone and new vocal partner Wendy Stubbs riding a punk funk bassline and live drums to create an intoxicating new-wave brew that’ll work for indie kids and DFA lovers alike. Track 2, Mr Brown sees things slow right down with a lilting, dubby feel and spacey Basic Channel style synths complementing Wendy’s ethereal vocals. For the less vocally-inclined, an instrumental version of Clipto rounds off the package. With early support from Andy Weatherall, and the live show getting back on the road for a busy summer, this promises to be the opening installment in a vibrant new chapter in the Toob story. |
